GHFC is a joint venture between Industrial Promotion Services (IPS) and Westgass, established to build a 200,000 ton/annum green hydrogen-based fertiliser production facility in Uganda. The project will use 100MW existing hydropower capacity secured through a long-term agreement with the state-owned utility.
This collaborative initiative combines their resources and expertise to achieve high impact hunger and poverty reduction with 2-4x increased agricultural productivity per hectare, decarbonisation with an equivalent of 217k tonnes/year avoided CO2, reduced deforestation due to increased soil nutrition and productivity of existing farms and lastly it will have large impact in industrialisation by the introduction of large-scale and technologically advanced manufacturing.
Industrial Promotion Services (IPS) is the infrastructure and industrial development arm of theĀ Aga Khan Fund for Economic Development (AKFED), which is an affiliate of theĀ Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN). IPS works alongside British International Investment (BII) through a joint platform for this initiative.
Westgass is a Norwegian green energy company with investments throughout the green hydrogen value chain, including power to power, power to mobility and power to industry sectors. Westgass is partnering with Neo Themis, an Africa-focussed infrastructure developer and investor, and working alongside Norfund and Norad for this initiative.
